DOST-NCR Deploys Flood Monitoring Systems to CEST Communities in Metro Manila

The DOST-National Capital Region Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Team deployed Automated Rain Gauges (ARGs), Water Level Monitoring Sensors (WLMS), and Early Warning System (EWS) Devices to sites under the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) Program in Metro Manila.

This initiative is in support of the DRRM efforts of barangay local government units to maintain a sustainable system for the collection of real-time meteorological data through the deployment and installation of new hydrometeorological devices in new sites within the region. This is aimed at achieving increasing efficiency in flood monitoring and warning.

Through DOST-NCR’s various partnerships with local government units, a total of 20 ARGs, eight WLMS, three (3) EWS/Warning Posts, and two (2) tandem devices (ARG+WLMS) were already installed and operated in 14 cities across the Region.

Communities will be equipped with capabilities on the utilization of these devices leading to evidence-based and more efficient disaster risk reduction and management strategies, especially in flood-prone areas.

Moreover, DOST-NCR DRRM Team continues to conduct regular inspections, calibration, and maintenance of deployed monitoring and warning systems. Devices in some areas will be replaced as deemed necessary.
