New Footwear Innovation and Technology (FIT) Research Laboratory to Boost Shoe Industry in Marikinaโ€ฏ

The shoe and leathercraft industry in the Shoe Capital of the Philippines is getting a much-needed boost with the inauguration of the new Footwear Innovation and Technology (FIT) Research Laboratory at the Marikina Polytechnic College (MPC) last April 14, 2025.โ€ฏ

Built with the help of funding from the DOST โ€ฏPhilippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) worth a โ‚ฑ5M under its Institution Development Program (IDP), andโ€ฏโ‚ฑ2M funding support from DOST-NCR, the FIT Lab aims to spark cutting-edge research, design, and prototyping for the next generation of Philippine-made footwear.โ€ฏ

The event brought together champions of science and the local industry, led by DOST-PCIEERD Executive Director Dr. Enrico C. Paringit, MPC President Dr. Rene Colocar, Engr. Roger Py and other MPC Board Members, FIT Project Leader Prof. Nelson O.โ€ฏ Arguilles, industry partners, and DOST-NCR Focal Person for Innovation Management, Engr. Reynaldo Badua, Jr.โ€ฏ

After the ceremonial ribbon cutting, guests were given a tour of the laboratory, which will soon be crafting future-ready soles and strides.โ€ฏ

As Marikina continues to stride forward with its legacy, MPC is stepping into a bigger role in levelling up local businesses, especially with this new state-of-the-art facility which will be a launchpad for local innovation. At the same time that MPC is accelerating its efforts in research and development, it is also expanding its partnerships, including those with DOSTโ€™s various agencies. With the recent establishment of their Technology Business Incubator, MPC is now more equipped to transform homegrown innovations into commercially viable products for both domestic and foreign consumers.โ€ฏ
