DOST-NCR Scales Up Marikina Community’s Bioreactor Operation

Aiming to capacitate the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) personnel of Brgy. Concepcion Uno, the DOST-NCR PAMAMARISAN Clustered Area Science and Technology Office (CASTO), in collaboration with the Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI), concluded the 4-day Training on Bioreactor Operation and Maintenance from 24-27 April 2023 held at the MRF Building, Brgy. Concepcion Uno in Marikina City.

A total of 18 personnel successfully completed the said training which included lectures and hands-on sessions on Composting Facility Requirements, Equipment Operation and Maintenance, Composting Start- up, and Regular Composting process. The training was designed to equip the MRF personnel with technical know-how on bioreactor operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting skills and knowledge, which eventually contributes to improving their solid waste management system.

The DOST-developed bioreactor converts biodegradable waste into organic compost which can be used as soil conditioner for gardening and farming.

Brgy. Captain Gerardo Sto. Domingo expressed his gratitude to DOST-NCR, and to Marikina City 2nd District Representative Hon. Stella Luz A. Quimbo for the unwavering support to the community’s Solid Waste Management Program.

“Now, we can properly and efficiently manage our collected biodegradable wastes and convert them into a more useful product,” said Brgy. Captain Sto. Domingo.

Attending the concluding activity were Barangay Concepcion Uno officials, DOST-ITDI resource speakers Engr. Joeco Arvesu and Engr. Benjamin Santos, and DOST-NCR PAMAMARISAN CASTO staff led by CASTO Head, Mr. Oscar Sevilla, Jr.

Concepcion Uno is a consistent partner of the DOST-NCR for community development through innovations under the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) Program.
