DOST-NCR and DOST-ITDI Support Barangay Fortune’s Sustainable Waste Management Efforts

Marikina City remains highly vulnerable to natural hazards, particularly flooding due to its geographical location. In response, the City has continuously strengthened its disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts by integrating science-based solutions. A key initiative is the installation of Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) and Automated Rain Gauges (ARG), which enhance real-time monitoring and improve the city’s ability to respond swiftly to potential flooding. These technologies play a crucial role in reducing risks, protecting lives, and ensuring community resilience.

To complement these disaster mitigation efforts, Barangay Fortune also adopted sustainable waste management practices to address environmental challenges. On February 17, 2025, the Department of Science and Technology – National Capital Region (DOST-NCR) and the Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) conducted a training session on the use, operation, and maintenance of the Dual Drum Composter Technology and Shredder. Attended by personnel from the Barangay Environmental Management Office (BEMO) and the Barangay Infrastructure, Repair, and Maintenance Team (BIRMT), the training aimed to optimize solid waste management systems, improve composting efficiency, and promote eco-friendly practices in the barangay.

This initiative, conducted in collaboration with LAMACO Enterprises, was participated in by 24 personnel from the Barangay Environmental Management Office (BEMO) and the Barangay Infrastructure, Repair, and Maintenance Team (BIRMT). The activity provided an in-depth understanding of composting and shredding technology, equipping participants with the necessary skills to optimize their barangay’s solid waste management system.

With the continued support of DOST-NCR, DOST-ITDI, and local stakeholders, Marikina City is setting a benchmark for disaster resilience and environmental sustainability. By fostering community awareness and technical proficiency, this initiative underscores the commitment of DOST-NCR and DOST-ITDI to environmental sustainability. Through continued support and collaboration, Barangay Fortune moves closer to achieving a cleaner, more organized, and safer community, setting an example for effective solid waste management for other urban areas.
