Harnessing the Potential of Grassroots Innovators

As part of its Science Beyond Borders campaign, the Department of Science and Technology-National Capital Region (DOST-NCR) conducted a three-day SalikLakbay at Marikina Polytechnic College in Sta. Elena, Marikina City from June 27-29, 2024. SalikLakbay, which is derived from the words “saliksik” (research) and “lakbay” (journey), aims to uncover and document grassroots innovations originating from local communities. Participants in this program include academic institutions, National Government Agencies (NGAs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Local Government Units (LGUs), and private sectors.

The first day, June 27, was filled with comprehensive discussions about the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) and Grassroots Innovations for Inclusive Development (GRIND) Programs, which both address immediate community needs, regional development and technological advancement. The discussions focused on comprehending each program’s objectives and the purpose of SalikLakbay. During the SalikLakbay, participants mapped out potential grassroots innovations (GIs) within selected barangays in Marikina City to promote the culture of innovation and sustainability at the community level by ensuring that local solutions are recognized and supported. Together with newly-acquired skills and knowledge to recognize and cultivate GIs, DOST’s partners embarked on a proactive exploration and practical application of the previous immersions and discussions to the selected barangays in Marikina City. Participants discovered under-recognized local urban innovation from Barangays Concepcion Uno, Fortune, Tumana, Sta. Elena, and Nangka in Marikina City. Among the notable GIs discovered were composting systems, solid waste management system, herbal products, and innovative food products. These recognized GIs will be further enriched and improved to provide solutions to pressing problems in communities in Marikina, and open opportunities further for sustainable and shared growth.
