DOST-NCR, DOST-FPRDI Provide Hands-On Bamboo Technology Training for PDLs
The DOST-National Capital Region, together with the Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI), conducted a three-part Training on Bamboo Technologies on May 16, 17-19, and 23-25, 2022.
The training was attended by 15 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) from the Bureau of Jail and Management Penology-San Juan Male Dormitory. Topics during the training series include Wood and Non-Wood Preservation and Treatment, Bamboo Craft Making, and Resin Lamination and Finishing Techniques.
On Wood and Non-Wood Preservation and Treatment, For. Sheryll Micosa and For. Mylene Rizare of DOST-FPRDI discussed the different ways of preserving and treating wood and non-wood forest products. They also shared how to recognize fungal and insect attacks, as well as demonstrated the proper and safe techniques on improving the resistance of bamboo against degradation to increase its quality and marketability.
Meanwhile, Engr. Jovito Elec discussed the variety of bamboo that is used for Bamboo Craft Making, including the bamboo’s properties and product development. Mr. Jonaz Niccolo Labastilla, on the other hand, demonstrated the proper use of processing tools and equipment for raw material preparation and production of bamboo crafts.
Lastly, Resin Lamination and Finishing Techniques was discussed by For. Aralyn Quintos. She demonstrated two procedures on laminating resin including first, using a molder, and second, coating over the surface of wood and bamboo products. The PDLs created pendants, key chains, tables, wall decorations, lamp shades, and key holders under her supervision with Mr. James Anthony Chan.
This series of training aims to upgrade the capability and provide livelihood options for PDLs as they prepare for re-entry to the community.
