HANDA PILIPINAS ’22: DOST Showcases S&T Innovations for Disaster Resilience and Preparation

The Department of Science and Technology, spearheaded by the DOST-National Capital Region and DOST-Technology Application and Promotion Institute, kicked-off the HANDA Pilipinas: Innovations in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Expo 2022 at the Hall A, World Trade Center in Pasay City on 09 November 2022.

This 3-day event will showcase various DOST-developed technologies and innovations on disaster risk reduction and response through interactive exhibits and fora to increase the awareness of the public on technologies that can be utilized on mitigating, preparing, and responding to hazards.

Some of these technologies include Early Warning Systems and Applications, Typhoon Tracker, Flood Detection, HazardHunter PH, and other disaster-related innovations.

DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. and 1st District of Aklan Representative and House of Representatives Committee for Science and Technology, Congressman Carlito S. Marquez, comprehensively discussed on the existing DOST-developed technologies and applications, and S&T bills that were authored and passed by the House Committee.

On his Keynote Speech, Secretary Solidum stressed that “Losses and disasters can be prevented.” Secretary Solidum encouraged the public to utilize the DOST-developed technologies for better understanding of hazard risks and prepare ahead any disaster which can come across every part of the country at any time.

In closing, he mentioned, “Science, Technology, and Innovations can safeguard our economic gains, but more importantly, it can save lives.”

The Expo will also hold a four-part fora particularly on a) Innovations in Early Warning Systems, b) Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Capabilities and Innovations, c) Shelter and Health Technologies for Disaster and Pandemic Relief, and d) Innovations for Food Security.

DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang, Undersecretary for Research and Development Dr. Leah J. Buendia, Assistant Secretary for Finance and Strategic Planning Ms. Maridon O. Sahagun, Assistant Secretary for Administrative and Legal Affairs Dr. Diana L. Ignacio, DOST Regional Offices and Agencies, other Government Agencies, Local Government Units, Public and Private Sectors, academe, and other industry partners attended the event.

The HANDA Pilipinas Expo 2022 will conclude on November 11.
