DOST-NCR Supports EMCon 2024: Driving Innovation and Collaboration
The Entrepinoy Volunteers Foundation, Inc. (EVFI) spearheaded the successful Entrepinoy MSME Conference (EMCon) on October 19, 2024, at the Henry Sy, Sr. Innovation Center, Miriam College in Quezon City. In partnership with Miriam College and the Department of Science and Technology – National Capital Region (DOST-NCR), the event aimed to empower startups and MSMEs by fostering innovation and collaboration. EMCon brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including business students, MSME owners, industry associations, and government institutions, all united in supporting the growth and potential of emerging enterprises.
The conference began with a warm Welcome Address from Ambassador Laura Q. Del Rosario, President of Miriam College, who underscored the importance of fostering entrepreneurial spirit among the youth and aspiring entrepreneurs. Following this, Engr. Romelen T. Tresvalles, DOST-NCR Regional Director, gave the Opening Remarks, where she highlighted the significant role MSMEs play in driving the economy, emphasizing DOST’s commitment to supporting their growth. An Inspirational Message was delivered by Prof. Fortunato T. Dela Peña, Chairman of the Entrepinoy Volunteers Foundation Inc. and former Secretary of DOST. He shared his vision of empowering MSMEs through science and technology, encouraging participants to leverage innovation to stay competitive.
The event featured key resource speakers from diverse industries. Kingson U. Sian, Chief Inspiration Officer, shared his expertise on leadership and the importance of cultivating a strong organizational culture. Lilian Concepcion Castro-Selda, Chief Finance Officer of the Palawan Group of Companies, provided insights on financial management strategies for MSMEs. Kerwin Legarde, Group General Manager of Robinsons Supermarket, discussed supply chain innovations and the importance of streamlining operations for business success. An engaging Open Forum followed, where the audience had the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the resource speakers, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and addressing real-world challenges faced by MSMEs in today’s market.
The forum was followed by inspiring success stories from two accomplished entrepreneurs. Monica Sandra Carino-Ronda, CEO of Affectiona8 Consumer Goods, a DOST-NCR SETUP-assisted company, shared her journey of building a brand centered on sustainability and consumer-centric products. Maria Sucgang, CEO and Co-founder of Remotify, a business process outsourcing firm, shared her experiences in navigating the fast-evolving digital outsourcing industry and the strategies that propelled her company’s growth.
The second part of the event featured Masterclasses, offering participants in-depth learning from industry experts. The sessions covered a range of critical topics for MSME success, including supply chain management, financial technology, marketing, and product development. Some of the notable lecturers included Carmina Bayombong, Founder and CEO of InvestED, who provided insights into financial technology (FinTech) and sustainability practices that can enhance MSME resilience. Jaime Banjo P. Aquino, a professor from Miriam College, discussed innovative approaches to marketing and product development. Daniel R. Francisco and Nicanor S. Villasenor III, from the Entrepinoy Volunteers Foundation Inc., led discussions on supply chain management, emphasizing efficiency and innovation in business logistics.
One of the event’s highlights was a panel conversation with two leading women entrepreneurs, Sherill Ramos-Quintana of Oryspa and Zarah Juan, both of whom have achieved remarkable success in their respective fields. The discussion, moderated by Maria Ester F. Bautista of EVFI, revolved around overcoming challenges, breaking barriers, and creating opportunities for women and partner communities in business. Their stories inspired many in the audience, particularly women aspiring to break into the social entrepreneurial world.
The day concluded with Closing Remarks by Miguel R. Unson III, President of the Entrepinoy Volunteers Foundation Inc. He expressed gratitude to the speakers, organizers, and participants for making the event a success and reiterated the importance of collaboration in the continued support and development of MSMEs in the Philippines.
The Entrepinoy MSME Conference 2024 was a resounding success, providing a platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and collaboration among MSMEs, industry experts, and government representatives. The event highlighted the critical role that innovation, mentorship, and strategic support play in empowering MSMEs to grow and thrive in an increasingly competitive market.
