DOST-NCR Introduces STI Programs and Solutions for Communities thru InnovTech

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) -NCR organized a two-day event titled “InnovTech: Making Science, Technology, and Innovation Easy for a Sustainable Future,” which was held from 29-30 April 2024 at the DTI-NCRO Center for Innovation and Technology Enterprises (CITE) in the City of Marikina. The workshop was participated by barangay chairpersons, officials, and staff from various communities in the NCR.
Director Maria Antonia Capili of the University Research and Development Center graced the events by presenting insights from a DOST-NCR-funded study conducted by Trinity University of Asia (TUA) on urban communities’ perceptions of STI, seeking to capture the perceived notions of local communities in Metro Manila, aiming to contribute to the development of DOST-NCR’s science communication initiatives. Another speaker, Mr. Angel Abad Barnes Jr., Regional Customer Education Manager of Neogen Asia-Pacific, explored STI topics such as innovation versus invention and developing an innovation mindset.
One of the highlights of the event was the guidance provided to community leaders on writing project proposals for the CEST and GRIND programs. Ms. Bianca Claudette Canlas, DOST-NCR’s Assistant Regional Director for Technical Support Services, shared insights on drafting proposals in accordance with the DOST-NCR’s formats and priority areas.
To encourage community engagement and use of STI to solve their day-to-day problems, the two-day workshop included a showcase of DOST’s technologies, programs, and services available through the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) and Grassroots Innovation for Inclusive Development (GRIND) programs to encourage communities to integrate STI into their development plans.
With this activity, we drum up our call to integrate and mainstream STI into the communities’ local development planning. Regular workshops, seminars, and forums will be further implemented to enhance community engagement and ensure that the benefits of STI would reach the grassroot communities in Metro Manila.
