DOST-NCR Joins WTAD 2022 Celebration in Paranaque City



The DOST-National Capital Region, DOST Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), and the Local Government of Paranaque organized "Seminar on Tsunami Hazards, Community Preparedness, and Early Warning System for Paranaque City" at the Paranaque City Fisherman's Wharf in celebration of the World Tsunami Awareness Day 2022 on October 28.

The event featured concepts on tsunami, Historical Tsunamis and Scenarios in Metro Manila, Tsunami Hazards and Impacts, Community Preparedness, Tsunami Information and Communication, Tsunami Hazards and Exposure Maps of Paranaque City, Tsunami Warning System and Mitigation Measures, in line with the themes Baybayin sa Pinas, sa Tsunami 'di Ligtas (Tsunami Hazards and Risks), and Tsunami Ready Kanaba? (Developing Tsunami-Ready Community).

Mr. Ishmael C. Narag and Ms. Joan C. Salcedo, Supervising Science Research Specialists from DOST-PHIVOLCS served as Resource Speakers during the event.

Participants from various sectors in Paranaque City which include Fire Volunteers, Military Reserved, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM), Community Disaster Volunteers, six (6) coastal barangays, San Dionisio Credit Cooperative, and local fisherfolks attended the said seminar.

The World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD) is celebrated every 5th of November as declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. In this light, DOST-NCR and DOST-PHIVOLCS conduct annual activities to increase tsunami awareness and preparedness in the Metro Manila Region.
