DOST-NCR Extends Livelihood Support to Persons Deprived of Liberty in Metro Manila

The Department of Science and Technology-National Capital Region exemplifies inclusivity of science and technology as it extends livelihood support projects to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-National Capital Region sealed through a series of Memoranda of Agreement.

Last June 29, DOST-NCR formalized the upgrading of equipment and provision of other S&T assistance to the BJMP - Manila City Jail's Bread and Pastry Livelihood Project which was established in 2006. This initiative provides inclusive capability building opportunities for male Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) while they are serving their time and coping with the challenges of prison life.

The project will help increase baking capacity, improve production capability and efficiency, reduce processing time, and also impart knowledge and skills to PDLs in preparation for their reintegration to society and allow them to secure their families' futures.

Moreover, on November 16, DOST-NCR forged another partnership with BJMP - San Juan City Jail Male Dormitory in support of its "Nakakulong Ngunit Nakakatulong" initiative.

Through the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) Program, DOST-NCR provided additional supplies and hand tools to upgrade their production of Christmas lanterns under the "Parol or Christmas Lantern Making Project" which involves a total of 170 male PDLs.

Tools and equipment such as circular saw, angle grinder, orbital sander, hand drill, and high-speed rotary tool kit were provided to the PDLs for product upgrading hence, creating premium lanterns and furniture.

The intervention assistance of DOST-NCR to these PDLs not only provides sustainable livelihood opportunities to expand their income-generating capacity, but also, this provides hope that they can hold onto until they are finally outside the bars.
