The DOST-NCR, in close partnership with the DOST-TAPI, held the first virtual Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE) in NCR last November 8-10, 2021 via Zoom with live simulcast on Facebook.

The 3-day activity was organized by the DOST-NCR and DOST-TAPI, and was opened for students and inventors in Metro Manila. Operating on the theme "Imbensyon at Inobasyon para sa Kalusugan, Kabuhayan, Kahusayan, at Kinabukasan", this year's RICE in NCR recognized the men and women inventors and researchers who creatively shared their brilliance through their innovative outputs.

The DOST-NCR received a total of 132 total entries for the RICE-NCR; 24 finalists were identified under the following categories: 1) Student Creative Research or Sibol (for High School and College); 2) Creative Research or Likha (for Government- and Private-Funded R&D endeavors); 3) Utility Model or Unlad; 4) Invention or Tuklas; and 5) Industrial Design or Banghay.

In addition to the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the DOST-NCR also held a webinar titled "Research Essentials and its Impact to a Science-Based Career" during the second day of the 3-day activity. Balik Scientist and PUP-College of Science Laboratory Head Dr. Abigail P. Cid-Andres, and DOST-NCR Food Safety Unit Head Engr. Rogelio B. Prospero, discussed concepts relating to academic scientific practices, specifically on research experience and the science investigatory project. They also encouraged the students and faculty who attended the webinar to conduct research that is aligned with their personal goals and passions, as well as research that focuses on improving the lives of others.

The RICE-NCR preludes DOST-NCR's 2021 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) celebration which will officially commence on November 11, 2021.
