DOST-NCR Celebrates Women in Science

One of the forums featured during the DOST-National Capital Region's celebration of its Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) is the HERStory: A Forum on Women in Science conducted on August 30, 2023 at Samsung Hall, SM Aura, Taguig City.

Carrying the sub-theme "Encouraging the next generation of aspiring women scientists to pursue their passions in STEM culture," HERStory centered on the support to and promotion of science-based decision platforms and science informed policies and programs for sustainable and equitable development, as well as the role of women in nation-building thru science, technology, and innovation.

Five equally empowered women from the academe, private institutions, and national government agencies shared their significant contributions and achievements in their respective fields of expertise. Dr. Lilia T. Habacon, the Executive Director of the Philippine Science High School, discussed the role of women in science education. DOST Assistant Secretary Dr. Diana L. Ignacio, on the other hand, talked about the initiatives being pursued in DOST for Gender and Development (GAD).

Women in science also featured prominent figures in entrepreneurship, data science, and life sciences such as Ms. Geraldine A. Estacio, Chief Executive Officer and President of DJM Grandeur Corporation; Dr. Erika Fille T. Legara, Associate Professor at the Asian Institute of Management; and Dr. Pia D. Bagamasbad, Professor at the University of the Philippines, respectively.

Truly, the Philippines needs to encourage the pursuit of women's passion in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to produce the next generation of women leaders in these fields.
