San Juan City takes steps to become a better home for innovators and entrepreneurs
Every successful business starts with an idea. But turning that idea into reality takes more than passion—it takes guidance, opportunities, and a community that believes in people with the courage to innovate.
This was the goal of the San Juan Startup Ecosystem Mapping Initiative, held last June 30, 2026, at the Multipurpose Room of Pinaglabanan Elementary School in San Juan City. More than just a workshop, the initiative brought together students, entrepreneurs, government representatives, educators, and innovation partners to address one important question: How can San Juan become a better place for people with great ideas to build businesses that create real impact?
The activity was made possible through the collaboration of the Local Government of San Juan City through the San Juan City Investment Promotion Center and the SK Federation of San Juan, Strategic and Collaborative Alliance for Leveraging Ecosystems (SCALE NCR), Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) PYLON Technology Business Incubator, and the Department of Science and Technology–National Capital Region (DOST-NCR). Together, these organizations worked to identify the city’s strengths, available resources, and opportunities that can better support aspiring startup founders and foster a more vibrant local innovation ecosystem.
The DOST-NCR serves as an innovation enabler, helping transform promising ideas into real-world solutions. Through capacity-building programs, technical assistance, access to innovation hubs and specialized laboratories, business incubation, and startup support, the agency equips aspiring entrepreneurs with the resources needed to develop, validate, and commercialize their innovations. By expanding access to these opportunities, DOST-NCR empowers more Filipinos to innovate, build technology-driven enterprises, and create solutions that address societal needs and drive sustainable economic growth.
One of the highlights of the activity was the identification and mapping of the city’s key stakeholders, entrepreneurial resources, innovation assets, existing startup support mechanisms, available facilities, and potential collaboration opportunities across the different stages of the startup journey—from ideation and launch to growth and scaling to shape and strengthen San Juan’s startup ecosystem.
For many participants, especially students, the event offered a fresh perspective on entrepreneurship. They learned that startups are more than just businesses – they are innovative solutions to real-world problems. More importantly, they discovered that they do not have to pursue their ideas alone, as a growing network of government agencies, academic institutions, incubators, industry partners, and innovation communities is ready to support them throughout their entrepreneurial journey.
More than mapping organizations or programs, the initiative mapped something even more valuable—the people behind San Juan’s growing culture of innovation. It underscored the importance of collaborative action among ecosystem partners—including the local government, national government agencies, academic institutions, industry, investors, incubators, accelerators, and the startup community—in creating an enabling environment where innovative ideas can flourish.
Through initiatives like the San Juan Startup Ecosystem Mapping, DOST-NCR continues to bring Agham na Ramdam closer to communities by empowering innovators, strengthening local startup ecosystems that can address the pressing needs of the city, expanding opportunities for science, technology, and innovation to drive inclusive and sustainable development.
