Employees are a company's greatest asset to achieve its business objectives. One of the best ways to retain staff and maximize their productivity is by creating a safe work environment for them. Every industry presents various kinds of safety hazards to its employees. The gamut of possible occupational safety hazards ranges from mild, immediate physical to severe dangers such as body strains, fire, and explosion. To ensure that a company gets the best out of their employees, it is crucial to provide knowledge on maintaining the physical and mental health and social well-being of workers through lessening/preventing unfavorable effects caused by working conditions.

Having said that, DOST-NCR, in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment-Occupational Safety and Health Center (DOLE-OSHC), conducted a 2-day Basic Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Training Course for Safety Officer 1 on June 10-11, 2019 at ADMATEL Building, DOST Compound, Taguig City. The training was participated by Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) adoptors from MUNTAPARLAS (Muntinlupa, Taguig, Parañaque, Pateros, Las Piñas) and PAMAMARISAN (Pasig, Mandaluyong, Marikina, San Juan) Clusters.

According to DOLE-OSHC, the Basic Occupational Safety and Health Training Course for Safety Officer 1 is a mandatory training course in pursuance with Republic Act No. 11058 and DOLE Department Order 198 s. 2018. It is an eight-hour OSH orientation plus two-hour Training of Trainers designed to impart knowledge and skills on basic concepts and principles of occupational safety and health to enable Safety Officers 1 to implement their respective company’s safety and health program.

The speakers comprehensively discussed topics about the introduction and general concepts of OSH, basic safety rules and measures, hazards identification, risk assessment and control (HIRAC), and administrative OSH requirements.

At the end of the training, the participants were issued a Safety Officer I (SO1) certification by DOLE-OSHC, given that the number of hours of training have been completed.

The same training will also be provided for the SETUP adoptors of CAMANAVA (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela) and PAMAMAZON (Pasay, Manila, Makati, Quezon City).
