DOST Waste Management Technology Helps in Barangay Fortune, Marikina’s Pursuit of Environmental Sustainability
Barangay Fortune in Marikina City’s environmental sustainability initiatives got a big boost with the turnover of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) developed Dual Drum Technology and Shredder Equipment last 13 December 2024 to officials and members of the said barangay. The acquisition of these technologies, which were made possible through the DOST-NCR’s Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Program, will revolutionize the barangay’s waste management practices, while at the same time contributing to the broader goal of building sustainable communities. Aside from providing funding to acquire the equipment, DOST experts also extended technical support to community members who will oversee the technologies to ensure their proper use and integration into Barangay Fortune’s Waste Management Program.
This project resulted from a strong partnership and close coordination between the DOST-NCR PAMAMARISAN Clustered Area Science and Technology Office (CASTO) and Barangay Fortune, led by Barangay Captain Rafael Mendoza Teope and Barangay Councilor Cesar P. Bordas. It highlights the critical role of government agencies like DOST in empowering local communities to adopt innovative, science-based approaches to address sustainable development concerns. It is also in line with DOST-NCR’s Science Beyond Borders campaign, which aims to ensure inclusive development in the region by providing science, technology, and innovation (STI)-based solutions to solve day-to-day concerns and challenges..
The Dual Drum Technology and Shredder Equipment, which were developed by DOST’s Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI), aim to optimize the processing of biodegradable wastes, allowing communities to reduce wastes that end up in landfills. By efficiently converting organic wastes into high-quality compost, the equipment supports urban gardening and soil regeneration efforts, making it a key enabler of a circular economy within the community.
The utilization of the Dual Drum Technology and Shredder Equipment reflects Barangay Fortune’s commitment to becoming a model for green and resilient urban living. The integration of this technology is more than just an upgrade to Barangay Fortune’s waste management efforts, but is also a step towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future in the barangay. By reducing the environmental burden of waste disposal and creating opportunities for compost production, Barangay Fortune is setting a precedent on the use of innovations for environmental management for other communities to follow.
