DOST-NCR, MMIEERDC join the International Symposium on Waste Materials Utilization

The DOST-NCR supports the 2025 International Symposium on the Utilization of Waste Materials (WOW 2025) as it officially launched the Association of Tokyo Tech Alumni and Research Scholars (ATTARS) International Symposium Series under the Institute of Science Tokyo (IST). This milestone event brought together scientists, engineers, academics, industry leaders, and government representatives to explore AI-driven innovations in waste utilization, circular economy practices, and sustainable development.
In alignment with the R&D initiatives on Circular Economy of the DOST and the Metropolitan Manila Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development Consortium (MMIEERDC), WOW 2025 showcased collaborative efforts toward building smarter and greener communities. One highlight was the presentation from Barangay Potrero, Malabon, a DOST-NCR partner community under the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology Program, which shared its zero-waste initiatives following recent typhoons. These include strict segregation practices, the use of bioreactors for biodegradable waste, compost donations, and a ban on single-use plastics. With further innovations such as the Tingi Tindahan, e-bikes, and AI-powered monitoring systems, Barangay Potrero has emerged as a model for sustainable solid waste management.
As part of WOW 2025, the DOST Tour also gave ATTARS members the opportunity to visit the Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMCen) and the Advanced Device and Materials Testing Laboratory (ADMATEL). These visits highlighted the Philippines’ growing R&D capabilities in advanced manufacturing, materials testing, and multidisciplinary research.
